What is TRAGER?
The Trager® Approach, developed by Dr. Milton Trager, combines Trager’s mindful touch and the effortless, fluid self-care movements of Mentastics®.
During a Trager session, the certified practitioner first assesses range of motion, gait and posture by inviting the patient to move in an exploratory fashion while experiencing the weight of different parts of the body and finding easier, softer ways to move. The movement informs the nervous system and the mind and therefore changes start to happen during the assessment. After the assessment, the patient lies comfortably (most of the times fully dressed) on a padded massage table.
The approach is educational and the practitioner introduces the Trager principles (the foundation of the approach) both at the table and during Mentastics.
Mindful movement engages the whole bodymind and makes it easier for the patient to take home the sensations experienced during treatment.
Injuries, traumas, emotional states, stress and postures create tensions in the body that are maintained unconsciously. These tensions generate patters of restriction and pain that can be overcome thanks to Trager. The sessions (and the movement the patient is invited to continue doing at home) facilitate the release of those holding patterns by improving the communication between soft tissue, nervous system and the mind.
Most patients are surprised when they reconnect with their bodily sensations to feel relaxed and in peace. This encourages them to find new ways to move and relate to their body.
Tragerwork has special applications to:
- Injury and post-surgical rehab
- Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis
- Orthopedic conditions
- Fibromyalgia,
- Arthritis and
- Physical/emotional trauma.
