COMPREHENSIVE CARE

COMPREHENSIVE CARE

Integrative or comprehensive care is a model of patient-centered care that approaches the person as a whole: mind, body and spirit, and takes into account the family dynamics and the importance of the support from the community. Treatments are individualized.

Many cancer centers in the country are offering conventional treatments integrated with alternative and complementary medicine with a broader vision of the nature of illness and health.

Ideally, cancer care will educate and encourage patients to participate in their own care and would make sure that the communication between patient and health care providers is open and efficient.

A comprehensive cancer care facility would offer or recommend nutritional education, moderate physical activity and stress management (through practices like meditation, yoga, progressive relaxation, Reiki, QiGong, support groups, family therapy).

“An integrative medicine approach seeks to discern multiple perceived origins of a disease process and address them all. Integrative medicine also assumes that an individual has the potential for healing at the spiritual level, even when physical healing does not take place.”
— Andrew Weil, MD / Founder, Program in Integrative Medicine, University of Arizona College of Medicine
